Hours Calculator FAQ

How do I calculate hours between two times across midnight?

Enter the start time and end time as usual. If the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator treats it as the next day, so a shift from 10 PM to 6 AM correctly returns 8 hours.

What are decimal hours and why do payroll systems use them?

Decimal hours express minutes as a fraction of an hour, so 7 hours 30 minutes becomes 7.5 hours. Payroll and billing systems use decimal hours because they multiply cleanly with hourly rates.

Can I subtract break time from worked hours?

Yes. Calculate the gross hours between clock-in and clock-out first, then subtract the break duration in the time subtraction mode to get net working hours.

How do I figure out overtime hours above 40 per week?

Sum the week's daily hours first, then split the total: everything up to 40 is regular time, and the remainder is overtime. In the U.S., nonexempt workers covered by the FLSA earn at least 1.5× the regular rate on the overtime portion; several states add daily-overtime rules.

How does quarter-hour rounding work on timesheets?

Many employers round clock times to the nearest 15 minutes (8:07 becomes 8:00, 8:08 becomes 8:15) under the "7-minute rule." Rounding must average out in your favor and against you evenly — a schedule that always rounds down is a compliance red flag.

What is the difference between 8:30 and 8.5 hours?

They are the same duration in different notations: payroll systems typically want decimal hours (8.5), because 30 minutes is half an hour. The conversion is minutes ÷ 60, so 7 hours 42 minutes = 7.7 decimal hours.
