Stock Average Calculator FAQ
How do I calculate the average price of a stock after multiple buys?
Add up the total cost of every purchase (price × quantity for each buy) and divide by the total number of shares. For example, buying 50 shares at $100 and 100 shares at $80 gives a total cost of $13,000 for 150 shares — an average price of $86.67.
What is averaging down?
Averaging down means buying more shares after the price falls, which lowers your average cost per share. In the example above, the second buy at $80 pulled the average down from $100 to $86.67. It reduces your break-even price but concentrates more capital in one position.
Should commissions be included in the average price?
For a true cost basis, yes — brokers add fees to your purchase cost. Enable the commission option and enter the flat fee per trade; the calculator spreads the fees across all shares automatically.
Does this work for fractional shares?
Yes. Enter decimal quantities (for example 0.5 or 2.75 shares) and the weighted average is computed exactly the same way.
