How do I find an appliance's wattage?
Check the label on the back or bottom of the device, its power adapter, or the manual. If only amps and volts are listed: Watts = Amps × Volts. Our reference table lists typical values for common appliances.
Where do I find my electricity rate?
On your utility bill — look for the price per kWh (energy charge). The US average is around $0.15–0.20 per kWh; rates vary widely by state and plan.
Why is my real bill different?
Appliances with thermostats (fridges, ACs, heaters) cycle on and off, so actual running hours are lower than wall-clock hours. Use the compressor's duty cycle — e.g. a fridge running 8 effective hours out of 24. Fixed customer charges and taxes on your bill are also outside this calculation.
