About GPA Calculation
What is GPA?
Grade Point Average (GPA) is a standardised way of measuring academic achievement used by Australian universities and institutions worldwide. It is calculated by dividing the total quality points earned by the total credit points attempted. The standard GPA scale ranges from 0.0 to 4.0, where 4.0 represents a High Distinction or A grade.
Weighted GPA
Weighted GPA accounts for the number of credit points each course is worth. A 4-credit-point course with an A contributes more quality points (16.0) than a 3-credit-point course with an A (12.0). This ensures that more intensive courses have a proportionate impact on your overall GPA.
The 4.0 Scale
The standard 4.0 GPA scale maps letter grades to numerical values: A/A+ = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C- = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, D- = 0.7, F = 0.0. Australian universities commonly use HD/D/Cr/P/F grades, but this calculator uses the internationally recognised 4.0 letter grade scale.
Cumulative GPA
Cumulative GPA includes all courses taken throughout your academic programme. It is calculated by dividing all quality points ever earned by all credit points ever attempted. Enter your previous GPA and credit points to see your updated cumulative GPA alongside your current semester GPA.
Why GPA Matters
GPA is used by Australian universities for honours programme admissions, postgraduate study eligibility, scholarship applications, and academic standing evaluation. Many employers also consider marks and GPA during hiring, especially for graduate programmes. Maintaining a strong GPA opens doors to further study and competitive career opportunities.
GPA Calculator FAQ
What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
An unweighted GPA uses a standard 4.0 scale where all courses are treated equally regardless of difficulty. A weighted GPA gives extra points for honours or advanced courses — for example, an A in an honours course might count as 5.0 instead of 4.0. Our calculator uses the standard unweighted 4.0 scale but accounts for credit points, so courses with more credit points have a proportionate impact.
How do I calculate my cumulative GPA?
To calculate your cumulative GPA, enter your previous cumulative GPA and total credit points earned in the "Previous GPA" section. The calculator will combine your previous academic record with your current semester courses to produce an updated cumulative GPA. The formula is: (Previous Quality Points + Semester Quality Points) ÷ (Previous Credit Points + Semester Credit Points).
How do I convert my Australian grades (HD, D, Cr, P) to GPA?
Australian universities typically use a grading system of High Distinction (HD), Distinction (D), Credit (Cr), Pass (P), and Fail (F). A common conversion is: HD = 4.0 (A), D = 3.5 (between A- and B+), Cr = 3.0 (B), P = 2.0 (C), F = 0.0. However, conversion scales vary between institutions, so always check with your specific university.
How do quality points work?
Quality points (also called grade points) are calculated by multiplying the grade point value by the number of credit points. For example, if you earn a B (3.0) in a 6-credit-point course, you earn 18.0 quality points (3.0 × 6 = 18.0). Your GPA is the sum of all quality points divided by the sum of all credit points attempted.
What GPA do I need for an honours programme?
Honours programme requirements vary by Australian university, but typically require a GPA of 3.0 or higher (Credit average) on a 4.0 scale. Some competitive programmes at Go8 universities may require 3.5 or above. Check your institution's specific entry requirements, as some also consider marks in relevant subjects.
