About GPA Calculation
What is GPA/CGPA?
Grade Point Average (GPA) is a standardised way of measuring academic achievement used by Indian universities and institutions worldwide. Semester GPA (SGPA) is calculated for each semester, while Cumulative GPA (CGPA) covers your entire academic programme. The standard GPA scale ranges from 0.0 to 4.0, where 4.0 represents an A grade.
Weighted GPA
Weighted GPA accounts for the number of credit hours each course is worth. A 4-credit course with an A contributes more quality points (16.0) than a 3-credit course with an A (12.0). This ensures that more intensive courses — like core engineering or medical subjects — have a proportionate impact on your overall CGPA.
The 4.0 Scale
The standard 4.0 GPA scale maps letter grades to numerical values: A/A+ = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C- = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, D- = 0.7, F = 0.0. Some Indian universities use a 10-point scale; this calculator follows the internationally recognised 4.0 scale.
Cumulative GPA (CGPA)
CGPA includes all courses taken throughout your academic career at university. It is calculated by dividing all quality points ever earned by all credit hours ever attempted. Enter your previous CGPA and credits to see your updated cumulative GPA alongside your current semester SGPA.
Why GPA Matters
GPA is used by Indian and international universities for admissions to postgraduate programmes, scholarship eligibility, campus placement screening, and academic standing evaluation. Many top recruiters — including Indian IT companies and MNCs — consider CGPA during hiring, especially for freshers. Maintaining a strong GPA opens doors to higher education and competitive career opportunities.
GPA Calculator FAQ
What is the difference between SGPA and CGPA?
SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is calculated for a single semester, while CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) covers all semesters of your academic programme. SGPA is calculated by dividing total quality points of a semester by total credits of that semester. CGPA is calculated by dividing all quality points earned across all semesters by all credits attempted.
How do I calculate my CGPA?
To calculate your CGPA, enter your previous cumulative GPA and total credits earned in the "Previous CGPA" section. The calculator will combine your previous academic record with your current semester courses to produce an updated CGPA. The formula is: (Previous Quality Points + Semester Quality Points) ÷ (Previous Credits + Semester Credits).
How do I convert my 10-point CGPA to 4.0 scale?
A common method used by Indian students is to divide the 10-point CGPA by the maximum GPA (10) and multiply by 4. For example, a CGPA of 8.5 on a 10-point scale would be approximately 3.4 on a 4.0 scale (8.5 ÷ 10 × 4 = 3.4). However, some universities use their own conversion formulas, so always check with the specific institution.
How do quality points work?
Quality points (also called grade points) are calculated by multiplying the grade point value by the number of credit hours. For example, if you earn a B (3.0) in a 4-credit course, you earn 12.0 quality points (3.0 × 4 = 12.0). Your GPA is the sum of all quality points divided by the sum of all credit hours attempted.
What CGPA do I need for campus placements?
Campus placement requirements vary by company. Many top Indian IT companies require a minimum CGPA of 7.0 (on a 10-point scale) or approximately 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Some MNCs and premium companies may require 8.0+ CGPA or around 3.5 on a 4.0 scale. Always check individual company eligibility criteria before applying.
