Percentage Calculator FAQ
How do I calculate percentage increase between two numbers?
Choose the increase mode, enter the original value and the new value. The calculator applies (new - original) / original x 100 and shows the full working, including whether the change is an increase or a decrease.
What is the difference between percent of and percent off?
Percent of finds a portion of a number, for example 15 percent of 200 equals 30. Percent off removes that portion from the total, so 200 with 15 percent off equals 170.
Can it handle reverse percentage questions?
Yes. If you know a final price after a discount and want the original price, the percentage modes let you work backwards from the known result to the starting value.
How do I calculate percentage change without mixing it up?
Percentage change is always (new − old) ÷ |old| × 100. A rise from 80 to 100 is +25%, but the fall from 100 back to 80 is −20% — the two directions use different bases, which is why a 50% loss needs a 100% gain to recover.
What is the difference between percentage points and percent?
Percentage points measure the arithmetic difference between two percentages: a rate moving from 3% to 6% rose 3 percentage points, which is a 100% increase in relative terms. Financial news conflates the two constantly — the distinction often changes the story completely.
What is the fastest mental math for tips and discounts?
Find 10% by shifting the decimal one place, then scale: 20% is double it, 5% is half it, 15% is 10% + 5%. On a $48.60 bill, 10% is $4.86, so 20% is about $9.72 — round to $10 and both you and the server are happy.
