Tax Calculator FAQ
How does bracket based income tax calculation work?
Each portion of your income is taxed at its own bracket rate rather than the whole amount at the top rate. The calculator applies each bracket segment cumulatively, which is how progressive tax systems actually work.
Can I estimate my effective tax rate?
Yes. The calculator shows both your marginal rate, the rate on your last dollar earned, and your effective rate, which is total tax divided by total income.
Are deductions and credits included?
You can subtract standard or itemized deductions before applying brackets. Credits reduce tax directly, so enter them separately for an accurate final liability estimate.
What is the difference between marginal and effective tax rate?
Your marginal rate applies only to the top slice of income — the dollars in your highest bracket. Your effective rate is total tax ÷ total income, which blends all brackets and is always lower than the marginal rate. A raise is taxed at the marginal rate, not as if all income moved into the new bracket.
Does the calculator include Social Security and Medicare?
No — it models income tax brackets only. Payroll (FICA) taxes add 7.65% on wages for employees (6.2% Social Security up to the annual wage cap plus 1.45% Medicare with no cap), and self-employed workers pay both halves. Add them separately when comparing take-home pay figures.
Which filing status should I choose in the calculator?
Use the status you will actually file: single, married filing jointly, married filing separately, or head of household. Bracket widths and standard deductions differ significantly between them — head of household brackets are notably wider than single, which is why qualifying for it changes the numbers materially.
