Waist-to-Height Ratio Calculator FAQ
What is a healthy waist-to-height ratio?
A WHtR between 0.40 and 0.49 is generally considered healthy. The simple rule of thumb: keep your waist circumference less than half your height. Above 0.50, health risks are typically considered increased.
How do I measure my waist correctly?
Measure halfway between the bottom of your ribs and the top of your hip bones, usually just above the belly button, keeping the tape horizontal and snug but not compressing the skin. Measure after exhaling normally, ideally on an empty stomach in the morning.
Why use WHtR instead of BMI?
BMI does not distinguish muscle from fat or tell where fat is stored. WHtR reflects central (abdominal) fat distribution, which is more strongly linked to cardiometabolic risk, and it self-adjusts for height without separate reference tables.
Does WHtR differ for men and women?
The commonly used boundary bands (0.40 / 0.50 / 0.60) apply to both men and women. Some research proposes slightly different cutoffs, but the "waist below half your height" rule is used for everyone.
